Archive for December, 2015

15 December 2015, Harihar. Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies, widely known as KIAMS, has achieved 43rd position out of 4200 + business schools in India the prestigious Business World rankings. The survey carried out by C fore in association with Business World listed IIMA, IIMB, IIMC and IIML as the Top 4 B-schools of the country. The survey was released on the 14th of December 2015 in the BW ‘B-School Education Special’. Bearing the title “The future of education and its leading tycoons”, the survey marked the return of many well-established B-schools back amongst the ‘A listers’.

Dr. C.N.Narayana, Director, KIAMS, sees recent market correction as a major reason for a much more efficient survey ranking, cutting through the “noise” that had crept in over the last few years in B-school surveys. According to him, supply outweighs demand of business education and this slowdown was only a matter of time.

“Many B Schools faced a shortfall on the admissions front this year. Institutes that relied heavily on marketing and were unable to catch up on innovation had to move out of the fray. On the flip side, B-schools with strong industry credentials, like KIAMS, which have continuously delivered quality, continue doing well even in seemingly adverse times.”

The BW annual B-school survey sets pretty high standards for its rankings. It assesses B-schools on an exhaustive set of parameters – 12 in all – that cover every possible aspect of business education. These parameters are Leadership/ Governance Quality, Faculty Welfare Development, Competence of Faculty, Student Intake/ Selection Process, Curriculum & Pedagogy, Industry Interface, Research, Infrastructure and Facilities, Placements, Internationalism, Life skills/ Soft Skills, and Value For Money. Of the total score of 3400, maximum weightage is accorded to Placements (500), followed by Industry Interface, Research, and Infrastructure and Facilities (400 each).

“KIAMS has spearheaded numerous industry-oriented innovations in full-time PGDM education,” said Dr. C.N. Narayana, Director, KIAMS. “We introduced the Balanced Growth Card – a holistic evaluation of the student that focuses not only on performance outcomes but also on demonstrated effort and underlying competencies. We were the first to Introduce seminar credits. This brought to the student the latest industrial practices in management, delivered by industry practitioners.”

Raised in 1991, KIAMS is celebrating its silver jubilee year. Originally designed for the purpose of being a captive management centre-of-excellence for the managers of Kirloskar Group, KIAMS became a regular B-school in 1995 with a strong industry-based curriculum. This move was deeply motivated by the larger benefit to the nation. By the late nineties, the Indian economy had opened up considerably, and industry-relevant managers were the prime need of growth and nation building. KIAMS adopted “Education through Values” as its credo… its ruling paradigm, in line with the Kirloskar philosophy and outlook. Today, KIAMS graduates all over the world are recognized for their industry-immersed knowledge.

The placement season for Kirloskar Institute of Advanced Management Studies (KIAMS) has started off on a good note, which brought good cheer for the rest of the students. So far, 31% of the students have already been placed, indicative of a strong placement season compared to the last two years. Overall this placement season is expected to bring an increased number of companies to the campus besides higher salaries for students. As a result, the enthusiasm among the students of KIAMS is palpable.

An important aspect of the placements so far is that the recruiter base has been diverse. As of now, IT, Telecom, Marketing Research, Realty, Sports, Consulting are some of the major sectors that have offered final placements to students. The process is still underway with several FMCG, Consulting, Finance, and Manufacturing companies in the pipeline. The average and highest CTC being offered to the students are also higher than last year.

Some of the big names that have recruited from KIAMS so far this season include Vernalis, Developer Group, Deloitte Consulting, Home First Finance, Neilsen, Coffee Day, Decathlon, InfoEdge and ICICI Securities. According to Ms. Shruti Das, from the Placement Cell, “The estimated number of companies visiting the campus this year is expected to go well beyond 75. In fact, we are proud to say that the company-student ratio presently is 1:5. This is an encouraging start and we are expecting things to only get better as the placement season progresses.”

Those indeed are heartening figures for KIAMS. For the 2014 – 16 Batch, KIAMS seems to be on its way to better the records set recently. In fact, given the way things have progressed during the current placement season, the reputed B-School is confident of placing the entire batch yet again. More so, with a larger recruiter base and higher salaries!

KIAMS draws on the group’s professional support and expertise to offer a dynamic learning experience to its students. Through various conclaves and seminars it offers vital industry exposure and platforms to interact with professionals from the corporate world.

In fact last year, the institute inaugurated its much talked about Innovation Centre that will prepare students for creative business leaderships. The centre also draws leading names from the industry, who share their vital experiences with students and keep them abreast with the latest in the industry. It has already held a successful conclave on the theme of ‘Attitude Skills and Knowledge (ASK) and employer’s expectations on skills & Employability in the presence of leading names from the industry and academia. Similar conclaves will follow in the near future.

Of course the backbone of the institute remains its highly decorated faculty team, many of whom have years of industry experience.

The institute helps create industry ready professionals who can rise up to the challenges they face in their professional lives. Hence the institute with its strong industry connections strives to offer internships with top rung organizations, in keeping with students’ interests. In the coming year, the institute intends to increase the internship period from two to four months in order to bring additional exposure to students.

Consistent efforts from the institute have borne results in the form of its placement record, which has remained prolific over the years. Some of the past recruiters from the institute include Hindustan Unilever Limited, Cit Bank, ICICI Securities, BNY Mellon, Crisil, Ashok Leyland, L & T Infotech ltd, Bajaj Capital etc. Last year too KIAMS had a strong placement season with more than 100 recruiters coming to campus. Hence it was not surprising that the institute became one of the founding members of The Indian Placement Reporting Standards (IPRS) process. The IPRS process is driven to maintain comparability, uniformity and transparency as far as the placement process is concerned.”

Management students now have an opportunity to be a part of the institution with a brilliant record and strong ethical standards to boot.
